Recycle Cat Food Bags Into Collars For Your Pet

Have you ever noticed the pretty colors you'll find on cat food bags? Wouldn't it be nice to turn those throw-away paper bags into something useful? What about a new collar for your cat? In fact, why not start recycling all sorts of paper bags into new Cat Accessories that will have your favorite feline purring with delight. Just like people, your cat can wear something different everyday! And, once you learn the simple procedure to making cat collars from recycled bags you'll want to make a huge assortment.

Open a cat food bag so that it lies flat. Measure around your cat's neck and add a couple of inches to that number. Cut a strip of the bag so that it's length is the number you've figured and the width is a couple of inches. The piece of the bag that you cut can be all one solid color or can feature pictures of the cat food on it. You can cut the name from the bag and use that for the collar - there are lots of different designs you can create depending upon the part of the bag you use.

Cut a piece of clear contact paper so that it is a half-inch longer than the cat food bag strip and so that it's a half-inch wider. Lay the contact paper out on the table so that the sticky side is facing up. Position the strip from the bag so that the colored or printed side is facing down. Place it on the contact paper so that it is a half-inch away from the edge. You'll position the paper strip so that it runs along one half of the contact paper. Be careful as you place the paper strip on the contact paper. Once it is stuck you will not be able to lift it up and reposition it. Start at one short end and stick it to the contact paper. Work your way to the other end, smoothing the paper strip down, and taking care not to wrinkle it. Now fold the adhesive paper over so that you trap the paper strip between the two layers of the contact paper. Press the ends and the edges so that the contact paper is secure. If you want, you can trim a quarter-inch of the contact paper off the long edge of the collar.

Before making the fastener for the collar slide on a "D" ring. You'll find them at craft stores and even hardware stores. Slide the ring onto the new collar so that you can attach a name tag or other tags. There are a couple of different ways to secure the cat collar. One is to simply attach velcro to the ends. If you purchase the adhesive type of velcro you can simply stick it on. If you use non-adhesive velcro you'll need to sew or glue it on. To sew it simply stitch around a square of it after positioning it on the collar. If you glue the velcro on you can use hot glue or any adhesive that works on plastic. A different way to make a fastener for the collar is to just attach snaps. You'll find small snaps at any place that sells fabric and they're easy to attach. Do not purchase the types of snaps that have to be sewn on; use snaps that come with a small tool for inserting them in fabric or plastic. Although you might feel intimidated by the snap process if you've never done it before you'll find it very easy. Follow the guide on the package and you'll be able to install the snaps in a minute. If you have more than one cat, and they often share accessories, you can make the collar adjustable to fit their different sizes. Simply add a second set of snaps, or another piece of velcro, and the collar can be shared.

There are even more ways to make cat collars by recycling. Remove the paper label from a can of cat food, for instance, and you can make a quick collar. Just place the label onto the adhesive plastic, as above, and fold it over to trap the label inside. Continue making the collar as stated above. If one label will not fit around your cat's neck you have other options. You can add another label, trimming away the ends and keeping the main images, or you can make a colored paper background. Cut a strip of construction paper or another type of paper to be the proper size. Position the canned food label onto the construction paper then add the clear adhesive paper.

By using the paper and plastic method you can create cat collars from virtually any type of paper. Make a cartoon collar by using a comic strip as the paper. Or, copy family photos onto printer paper and make a family-theme paper collar. You can even cut a simple strip of tin foil and make an elegant, shiny collar for your cat. Other paper choices for making new collars include gift wrap, grocery ads, greeting cards, old envelopes or even product boxes. Cut the picture you want from the product box then peel away most of the cardboard layering until you have just the paper that contains the image. This is a fun project that will have your cat looking like a true fashion plate in the neighborhood!

Why do animal shelters let you take home terminally ill cats?
I am getting really worried as I research FIP that my cat has this terminal illness. Should there have been steps taken and information about this cat given to me before he was adopted? I paid for him to be neutered but since he had a cold when I took him home, he could not get the operation, and I was told that he would recover in a few weeks. We payed about $80.00 for the cat including the antibiotics and neutering. I am obviously not getting him neutered if he is terminally ill. I am really just furious and would like my money back. What the heck, I thought I had a healthy cat. We already spent about $500 on cat accessories and now we won't have a cat, not to mention the pain and suffering. I feel that we were screwed over and not told things...and not to mention the fact that our friends and realtives may give their cats a this disease if they don't wash their hands - its highly contagious.
