Maine Coon Cat Characteristics

What is the Maine coon cat?

Origin of the breed:

The exact origins of the breed is unknown, although there are many theories and folk tales of where they came from. One of these stories involves Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, who was beheaded in 1793. The story goes that before her death, Antoinette attempted to escape France with the help of Captain Samuel Clough. She loaded Clough's ship with her most prized possessions which included six of her beloved Turkish Angora cats. Marie never made it to the United States, but her cats safely reached the shores of Wiscasset, Maine, where they mated with local short-haired cats and evolved into the modern breed of the Maine Coon.
Although some even believe that the cat originated from an ordinary cat interbred with a raccoon, which is genetically impossible! Their bushy and striped tail would probably be to blame for this story! Another story about where the breed comes from, is that the Vikings could have brought cats with them from Norway, which is also a more feasible explanation, as the Maine Coon looks like the Norwegian Forest cat of Northern Europe.
The most probable tale though is that they originated from the union of shorthaired house cats, Persian cats and Angora cats, evolving into the modern cat breed we all know and love today.

Characteristics:

Body:
The breed is the biggest domestic cat breed.
Males weigh from 15 to 25 lb (6.8 to 11 kg) with females weighing from 10 to 15 lb (4.5 to 6.8 kg)
The height of adults can be between 10 and 16 in (25 and 41 cm) and they can reach a length of up to 40 in (100 cm), including the tail, which can reach a length of 14 in (36 cm)
Their bodies are robust and muscular, to support their own weight, and the chest is broad.
Maine Coons possess a rectangular body shape and Main Coons mature slowly.; their full potential size is normally not reached until they are three to five years old, while other breeds of cats take about only one year.

The most common color seen in the Main Coon breed is brown tabby.

Maine Coon Head & Ears:
Medium in width and slightly longer in length than width with a squareness to the muzzle
Muzzle/chin is visibly square, medium in length and blunt ended when viewed in profile. It may give the appearance of being a rectangle but should not appear to be tapering or pointed.
Chin is strong, firm and in line with the upper lip and nose.
Large ears, well-tufted, wide at base, tapering to appear pointed. Lynx tips mostly present in Main Coons.

Eyes:
The eyes are big, expressive, wide set. Slightly oblique setting with slant toward outer base of ear.
All colours of eyes are accepted.

The breed is also well known for yowling, chattering, chirping, "talking" ("talking back" to their owners), and making other loud sounds.

Cats Aggresive After The New Baby?
Okay well I recently moved downstairs and my 3 cats who used to have a whole room to play around in are now in a pretty big storage closet type of room...and I recently had a baby 2 weeks ago...this is why they are in there...I let them out once in a while, but only when the baby's out or under my supervision...and my mom used to be able to walk in and the cats were fine, especially with my oldest cat who's 6 years old, but she's recently become really aggressive towards anyone but me...if I go in, they come rushing and surrond me wanting my attention, but as soon as my mom trys to, they attack and hiss at her...my oldest and the youngest have always hisses at each other, but it seems worse now...I know they miss me and prolly are frusterated with less room to themselves..now...so what can I do to stop this? I try to spend as much time as possible with them, seeing as I'm always home...what can I do to stop all this or help out so that my mother can be able to get stuff and not worry?? Ugh...ppl need to learn to READ THE WHOLE THING!!! I said, I let them out when I'm there, and the baby is in my arms, or next to me and I don't let them get near me, I let them have their space!! And I figured I could give them those calming pills or put them in a cage while my mom had to get stuff from there...they're just calm when I go in so I have to go get the stuff...I don't think I need to get rid of them, I love them too much...but non pet owners wouldn't understand... I want to be able to keep my cats, I do let them out during the day and they don't pay attention to the baby, I think they just miss me and their own space...they come and sniff the baby, and walk away minding their own business, my mom makes it worse because when she trys to go in there, she whips things at them telling them to move or go hide...

Thats IT my poor Sasha. You'll never belive what they are doing.?
Ok yesterday I asked a question about the earlier situation. So i'll summerize what happened. I found a pregnant female cat she had her babys. My neighbors tom cat came over the fence into my backyard. Tryed to kill the babys Sasha is a 60 lb pitbull she killed the tom now she is not cat aggresive she loves thoose kittens. Well they called the law and said that she was aggresive and dangerous. That she tried to bite them. Well the cop said they would have to prove it. So I let her out at 5 am this morning. Then go back to bed suddenly I hear a strange noise. So I get up and go out side. My idoit neighbors are standing on somthing on their side of the fence. Ones got a camera and the other one is tossing rocks and has a silent dog wisle screaming at Sasha trying to get her to lunge at him. I cussed him out and brought her back inside. Now what can I do. I mean how would you feel if your dog wsn't safe in her own backyard.

Why is my cat aggresive?
My cat is acting aggresive tword all of my other pets (another cat, a dog, and a bunny). I have had her since i was 4 and i am now 14, so she is 10 years old. when we were little we used to play chase. she would chase me, then corner me then run up the walls (my parents had to repaint alot because of the claw marks on the walls) her aggresion has increased the older she gets, well now that she is older, she lets me pet her for about 3 minutes then growls and swats at me then runs away. And she attacks all of my other animals, I dont want her to be like this.... I have cryed myself to sleep before because I dont know what i did wrong. I love her to death, she is my baby girl. I dont know if she is just bored or if she is just getting rid of energy but in the wrong way. I know that she is not sick or in pain.... Please help.... I know that she is not in pain because i made my mom take her to the vet. the vet gave her a full cheack up. And i dont favor any of my other pets any more than i favor her. i love her the most.... she is already deaf, she was born that way :( i would do anything for my baby girl
