Cat Aggression
Cat Aggression Problems: Learn The Facts.
Cat aggression is indeed a very serious issue if you are a cat owner. And because there are several different types of Cat Aggression you have to determine which type of aggression your cat shows. You also have to determine under what circumstances your cat is aggressive. Is it an aggression towards you? Is it an aggression towards other members of your family or is it an aggression towards stangers?
If you notice that your cat is behaving strangely or aggressively then the best thing you can do is to pay a visit to a professional behaviorist. The behaviorist will perform certain physical tests (e.g. blood tests) and then will try to determine the type of aggression your cat displays.
To correct your cat's aggressive behavior you might need to make changes to the pets environment or even try certain drug therapies as part of the treatment.
I will now try to explain the most significant types of cat aggression
1. Fear Cat AggressionThis type of Cat Aggression may appear in cases where your cat is exposed to unfamiliar people or places. Most cats will retreat when feared but some may want to fight! Especially if they are on their own territory. Now if the cat is harmed in any way during such an encounter this could cause serious problems in the future. Cats do not forget easily. The best way to deal with feared cats is to approach them in a friendly and calm manner.
Another reason that will trigger your cat's fears is punishment. Be especially carefull when trying to train your cat. They are really sensitive.
2. Territorial Cat AggressionThis type of Cat Aggression is usually shown towards people or other animals that approach the cat's territory.
3. Predatory Cat AggressionCats like other mammals have the desire to chase and hunt their preys. This behavior may sometimes be directed at people or other pets. This is a very dangerous type of cat aggression and must be treated as soon as possible. The younger the cat the better to try to prevent Predatory Cat Aggression from developing.
4. Social Cat AggressionCats are very sociable pets. Researchers have tried to discover the social structure and relationships between cats. Social structures may lead to aggressive behaviors or actions. Your cat may display such a behavior in order to take control of a situation, for example when your cat is challenged by another cat or even by a person. A way to deal with Social Cat Aggression is to take control of all rewards. Teach your cat that an obedient behavior is the way to get the reward. Cats are very smart pets and will instantly realise the rules of the game.
These are some of the Cat Aggression Types and the most significant ones. There other types of Cat Aggression. Aggression can arise at any age. The most importand causes of all types of cat aggression are:
- medical problems
- genetic disorders
- owner behavior
- others behavior
- spoiling the cat
- wrong rewarding methods
Many researchers also claim that cat aggression is caused by genetic propensity.

Cat Aggression????????
2 weeks ago our affectionate cat gave birth to 3 kittens. Due to a death in the family we had to leave the cat and kittens in the care of a minder who came in daily to feed and water them for a total of 6 days.
We arrived home from te funeral yesterday since arriving home the cat has shown aggressive behaviors from hissing when we passed the door of the room containing the kittens to seeking out and attacking our 12 year old daughter several rooms away < unprovoked--- 56 stitches required to close the various wounds>
We have decided to get rid of the cat as our daughter is afraid in her own home with the cat in it's current state... Our daughter is currently hold-up in her room despite the cat and kittens being crated awaiting their departure in the morning...
What would cause a cat to become so aggressive in such a short period of time? Will the aggression pass?
We know we can not keep the cat as our daughters piece of mind in her own home is the most important thing, but we wonder what has caused the cats drastic change in temperament and ferocity never displayed before...
The minder in question has cared for the cat in the past with no issues.. Our other cat as well as the dog also cared for by the minder show no signs of aggression... Just the mother cat.
We have had the cat for 9 years.
We chose not to spay the cat as she is a pure breed and we have selectively bred her < for a total of 6 kittens 2 litters in 9 years>.. With her past litter she showed no signs of aggression and was minded by the same minder within a month of giving birth.
She will not be going to a kill shelter she will be going to a breed rescue shelter with the hopes of her being able to settle and live out the rest of her life happily...
Our daughter is showing no fear of our other cat and understands one cats behavior is that cats behavior not all cats behavior..
The cat is currently crated for our daughters and our protection, 1 trip to the E.R. for stitches today is enough.

Cat is insane! Need help!?
My 5 year old female cat has suddenly started attacking her mother who is 10 years old. For two days, the younger cat has been actively seeking out and finding her mother and starting fights. What can I do? I have purchased and used a pheromone spray and it doesn't seem to do anything. We also gave them baths just in case there was a weird scent or something. The younger cat is not spayed but the mother is. But everything has been fine for the past 5 years. She's currently not in heat. We have 6 cats total and the younger cat is not attacking anyone else.
Please don't just give me answers like... Get her spayed or links to websites about sudden cat aggression. I have looked into these websites, obviously, and need more options. And yes, we do plan to spay her... but I need some advice as to why she's doing this, what to do until she's spayed, etc.
Thanks!
It's not that I don't want to hear that she needs to be spayed, just I'm looking for ideas/answers until I CAN schedule her to be spayed. I know it will help the situation - I am just looking for some ideas to help calm things down somewhat in the meantime... which, thankfully, some of you were able to give me some ideas and different perspectives on the situation.
Also, the 10 year old isn't the dominating cat in the house. She's pretty laid back. One of the males is the "bully" of the house. All of the other cats are spayed/neutered.
Momma and the young one used to cuddle daily and groom one another for hours... seeing them like this is just so distressing.
And to Shortee: What the heck are you talking about rubbing my cats nose in urine??? HUH? I don't do that and that's nothing to do with my question or problem...

Sudden Cat Aggression to my puppy.?
Hello,
My cat Daisy is 4 yrs old. Has lived with a black lab, italian greyhound, and my sisters cat Skitz...
As of last yr, 4/2008, my sister and our cats moved into an apt together here in Ga. From our mothers house Where they all lived together.. Daisy has all of a sudden, got randomly aggressive with skitz just a few months after moving in?for NO reason. Skitz will be sleeping on my sisters bed, Daisy will walk in sit down look around see him and just plain old attack him and walk away like nothing.. And sktiz is very docile and seriously would not hurt a fly. he wakes up like oh my what just happened....
In July, I adopted my Puppy, Sadie, She is a most well behaved dog. Doesn't pee or poop in house. when she does play with Daisy ( the aggressive cat in question) daisy plays back running with her. When Daisy Stops running So does Sadie at least 3 ft away NEVER has the puppy pounced or barked at my cat. Daisy has been MOST tolerant and enjoys her company... Daisy will walk up to Sadie rub her face on the dogs purr, and walk away.
Sadie does NOT touch the cat food, or the litter box?. or chase daisy to much, when she does chase her, Daisy will hiss a lil? bit and Sadie will immediately . turn around and walk away... Doesn?t even instigate it further....
Sadie and I were sitting in the living room last week, And here comes Daisy... She sits down about 10 ft from sadie whos sound asleep on the floor on Sadies blanket I bought specifically for sadie? and daisy just started to growl and attack her.. Scratched her face really bad.
I'm very concerned cause theres absolutely no reason for Daisy to be aggressive Sadie NEVER goes in my sisters room (where the cats stay) thats the cat room, daisy KNOWS that her place for safety and relaxation... the living room is the "family room" where every one is. and Sadie has her crate in my room for sleeping... The cats been fine with sadie for the last 6 weeks, no problems then all of a sudden all this aggression... Even towards me.. And she has NEVER been mean with me.... I raised her... And I do NOT give one or the other more attention.. When daisy comes up to me when I have Sadie I stop petting Sadie and immediately. go to Daisy so she knows mommy didn't forget her... and im not replacing her..
I don?t know what to do... Daisy has toys food. her own dish in her spot.. litter box is very clean.. and after the attacks Daisy acts like NOTHING has happened.. nuzzles the puppy and me after attacking.. as if she has a plit personality all of a sudden..
Any ideas of whats going on? Is there some sort of like calming meds OTC I can give her???
Please help

Need help with cat aggression issue please?
I have 3 cats, all neutered males - have had them for over 5 years. The last couple of days, the 2nd oldest cat has been attacking the oldest. They've been vicious, blood-drawing fights that are always started by the 2nd oldest cat. I don't know why he's doing this or how I can stop it. Would really appreciate any advice. I cannot even fathom getting rid of this cat, I love him too much, but I can't let him keep attacking my oldest. This morning it was so bad I had to take him to the vet and he received 4 stitches. I've locked the 2nd oldest cat in the spare bedroom for now, but I really need some help here. PLEASE no rude comments. Please please please. I'm very upset and desperate to fix this. Thank you.
Thank you everyone who has answered so far! Brilliant suggestions. I think I was just so freaked out that I never even thought to take him to the vet to make sure there's no medical reason. Thank you for bringing back to my senses. I will do that immediately. I will also add another litter box - right now there is only 3.
