Cat Behavior Training

Being a cat owner can be a very rewarding thing, but many people are discouraged from owning a cat because they hear horror stories about cats misbehaving. It is true that many cats have behavioral problems, but it isn't because they are unintelligent or just simply naughty by nature. Cats are very independent creatures and unless they are properly trained, they are probably going to have behavior issues.

We have all heard the expression "curiosity killed the cat." Cats are very curious by nature and this is important to remember when your cat is "misbehaving." Just like humans, cats get bored and are likely to be very attracted to unknown objects. Keep this in mind when your cat decides to play with the picture frames on the wall or knock your jewelry off your dresser. They aren't doing these things to intentionally upset you,
they don't understand what they are doing is considered a bad behavior. Successful Cat Behavior Training involves positive reinforcement, meaning encouraging your cat to behave properly, rather than punishing them for behaving badly. Don't ever hit or scold them.

In the case of your cat getting on your dresser, instead of yelling at them or throwing something to scare them off, nicely pick your cat up and put them back on the floor. Continue to do this until they figure out they aren't supposed to be up there, and then reward them with a treat or affection each time they jump off on their own or when they eventually just stop jumping up all together.

The difficulty with Cat Behavior Training is that people don't ever think about it until they own a cat that has behavior issues, which is only natural. It is important for people considering getting a cat to do research on common cat behavior problems and educate themselves on how to fix them. Knowing what to possibly expect and educating yourself on how to deal with the problem will help you get a head start before you bring your new cat home. Once you have the new cat, start training them immediately. It is never too early to start behavior training your cat.

Not all cats are going to have behavior problems. Each cat has a unique personality, just as humans, and some cat owners never have an issue with their cat's behavior, others will have to train theirs. Don't let the possibility of having to train your cat keep you from having one as a pet. They are very loving animals and you can develop a great relationship if you put in the time and effort it takes.

Cat Behavior/Training Question?
I have a couple of 3 yr old domestic cats. The dominant one (Hana) seems to have taken control of our bed and sleeps with us at night. The more passive cat (Lani) wont get up on the bed to sleep with us as long as Hana is there. Lani will spend all night alone elsewhere. If Hana is not around, Lani will be up on the bed with us but will leave if Hana comes up. Any way to train the cats to share the bed? There is plenty of room for both of them

Cat behaviour/training?
My cat constantly uses his paw to scoop water out of his bowl and onto the kitchen floor until there is no more water left in his bowl! Is there anything I can do to stop this little game of his? I am awfully tired of mopping my kitchen floor every couple hours.

If you get your cat declawed ...?
... would you keep the cat even if she - starts biting ? - soaks your sofa because she rejects litter box due to sore and painful paws ? - pay the vet bills in few year to treat the postural defect she develops due to loss of 40 % her paw she walks with ? Last but not least. Would you take into consideration to buy a cat behavior training book instead of getting your cat declawed? Additional info: I never would get one of my cats declawed. I would rather die that asking a vet to declaw my cats. I just asked because I am curious if those people who would put their cats through this even think about the potential unwanted behavior the cat may develop and what they would do with their now declawed cat develops unwanted behavior. And my both cats have 1 scratch post and 1 cat tree each + I have the book "starting from scratch" ... And yes, also a vet who pays for my cat's reha, vet psych and has to pay for all harmful and undesirable side effects my cats will develop because he "misunderstood" my request not to touch my cats paws when they got spayed. @ Liz I have had around 10 own cats within 30 years and about 50 foster cats and kitten, and all of them had no problems when I - or any other person they knew - touched their paws - even if gently squeezed, no problem for my cats. Therefore I assume your cats don't like to be touched at their paws because they are either remember what happened (if they can't communicate doesn't mean they don't remember) and/or because their paws are sensitive or even painful. Animals just don't show discomfort because doing so would tell predators that kitty is an easy prey if they would have to live in the wild. The two cats I currently have loved to get massages at their paws pads - and now they just hiss and growl if my hand even gets close to their paws.
