Why Do Cats Cough Up Hairballs

A common question among cat owners. Besides the mess it creates that someone has to clean up you have to wonder how comfortable it is for your feline friend. Is there a way to prevent or cut down on the amount of hairballs your furry friend has?

Hairballs in their most basic form are just a lot of hair that has been swallowed by your cat during grooming.

Hairballs among cats can be mild to extremely painful. The symptoms range from light coughing, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite and in rare extreme cases could require surgery to successfully remove a stubborn hairball.

So how can we as cat owners help them have fewer or zero hairballs? The first thing to try is to change their diet. There are many cat foods on the market that claim to help reduce or eliminate hairballs. When shopping for cat foods look for the ones that have a hairball formula it should be listed clearly on the bag.

Another option is to get rid of the main ingredient that causes hairballs - the hair. to accomplish this you need to brush your cat daily. For cats with short hair you need to use a rubber brush. If you cat has long hair use a comb that has wide teeth. Another option you could try is a lint roller. Just roll it over your cat daily. My cat loves it. I guess it feels more like a massage.

Another option to try as a natural home remedy is petroleum jelly. You can mix a little of this with your loved ones food. If you mix about 1 teaspoon for every 10 pounds that should do the trick.

These suggestion should help you reduce if not eliminate any future hairballs your cat may have. I hope I have completely answered the question I started with. Why do cats cough up hairballs?

Why does my cat coughs?
I have a 9-yo tabby cat and been under my custody ever since she was a few weeks old kitten. About last month she started coughing out of SUDDEN. Her cough comes in episodes and it was once daily OR once every other day. The cough was like shes trying to cough up something but its non prodctive. Her meal isnt affected as she eats and drinks well. She also runs around and play too. But i did brought her to the vet and the vet took an X-ray of my cat lungs. She said the heart size is normal. And the lungs are clear and theres no fluids or whatsoever. But the vet did said that the lungs are having early stage of 'calcification' due to aging. The vet gave her a shot of Depredil and also a 2-week course of anti-biotics. While she was on antibiotics she didnt cough at all. So aft the 2 weeks i brought her back for a review and told the vet she didnt cough since the last visit. The vet said my cat is fine. Just about a week+ ago my cat had a recurrence of the cough episodes. Its not worst but shes not having daily AND it usually occurs either at night, or the early morning like 6am-ish. Sometimes she blows out the air in her nose in a harsh manner. Not really sneezing but yeah. She coughed this morning about 5am so im still quite worried now. Description of her coughs: 1.) She tends to hunch her back with her neck out to cough BEFORE i brought her to the vet for the 1st time. 2.) She swallows her saliva back (i think) after she coughs. 3.) Her breathing rate is around 30-35 per minute at rest. 4.) She has this vibrating sound when breathing these days and it sounds like purring but is this normal? 5.) She is eating, drinking, and behaving normally. Is this a serious case or should i wait to see any improvements? Im worried cos im not used to see her cough out of sudden. What will the vet do since the cough is a persisting one? What other symptoms should i look out for? For those who are experienced with cats, what could this mean? Is this Feline Asthma? Answering these questions will help me alot seriously! Thanks.

What's wrong with my dog?
I have a 5 year old female Chihuahua. She seems to wheeze a lot and it sounds like a cat coughing up a hairball. She also struggles to breathe often and she snores very loudly. We took her to the vet a few months ago and he didn't notice anything wrong with her except that she had a chronic ear infection, however, i am not so convinced that he was right.

Cats Coughing Attacks-Vets Have No Clue?
I have two cats. My first cat, Gunny, has had coughing attacks ever since I got him (almost a year and a half ago). They didn't happen very often. Maybe two or three times a month. A year ago I got my other cat, Rose. We got her when she was a kitten and she's perfectly healthy (got her all her kitty shots and everything). In Febrauary, Gunny's coughing attacks started becoming more frequent (about 7 to 10 times a day) so I took him to the vet. I thought it was asthma because of the way he would extend his head and his gums would get pale during an attack. The vet did an x-ray and a mini blood panel. They said there was no sign of asthma in his x-rays but his eosinophils were elevated. She basically ruled out asthma since there was no sign of it on the x-rays and just gave me an antibiotic (for what? idk). After a few days on the antibiotics, it wasn't getting any better so I took him to the vet. This time I saw another doctor. I'm a vet assistant so I knew that the elevated eosinophils means he either has allergies or a parasite infestation. I was still thinking asthma and the vet I saw this time thought asthma too. He gave me some asthma meds and said that if that didn't work then a steroid would be tried next and then if that didn't work, an inhaler. The meds worked for about a day but his coughing fits started so he gave us the steroids. It was a bid so the second time I gave it to him he had a BAD attack. When I tried checking on him he would have a painful meow and would hiss at me (something he NEVER did) so I rushed him to the vet. They told me not to give him the steroids and are thinking now that it's some sort of parasite. Checked him for heartworms (antibody test came back negative) so they thought lung worms. He's been on the dewormer for a week now and no luck. We have one more week on the dewormer but I feel like it's something. Oh yeah. And now my other cat, Rose, is starting to have a few coughing fits. I'm planning on taking him to another vet to see what they think. I just wanted to get some more opinions. So just to answer some of your questions. Right now he's on a dewormer for lungworms. Like I said, not really helping at all. When they took the chest x-rays they said his heart looked fine but I think to really see if it's healthy we would need to do an ultrasound (which I'm thinking about asking my next vet to do). I did a fecal float and direct on him a few weeks ago myself and didn't see any other type of parasites (roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, etc.). I mainly use steam cleaners to clean my house with and I stopped using any sort of air freshener. Next thing I'm going to try is using a natural litter.

Cat suddenly looses control in all legs and tail?
About a week ago, I heard my 3 year old cat coughing very odd-like on my staircase around 3 A.M. The following morning, she was still coughing, but as it was the previous night, she coughed very briefly and rarely. When I returned from school, she was sitting in front of my room door and laid there not bothering to turn her head. I soon left to my friends house, and about 2 hours later my mom calls me saying that she collapsed in front of her and she is taking her to the vet. The vet found out that she had a really high fever of 107.5 I believe, and the vet gave her antibiotics to fight it. When she returned from the vet, she had her third eyelid cover about a third of her eyes, and had a head tilt to the right side of her.She moved her eyes side to side wildly. She also could not stand and just laid there. A few days later, the fever went away and she was still having a head tilt, third eyelid still covering a third of her eyes, and she couldn't stand. She would sometimes roll around. We took her to the vet and they had no clue what this could be, and told us to wait to see if she heals, they thoerized that she had a neurological attack or something related to that. It has been about a week now and all she can do is move her legs a little bit, she will rarely kick them around, and has no coordination in her tail. She also stopped rolling. She stopped moving her eyes side to side. She also still has a head tilt, but sometimes she forces her head into the right side of her stomach by turning her entire body and using her front legs to force. She also has her third eye lid covering about a fourth of her eyes. She also hardly moves around. I hand feed her a special type of wet food, and give her water with a syringe into her mouth. Basically, with all of the information I have provided above, I have a paranoid feeling she will not fully recover and have permanent paralysis. I was wondering if you know what this must be, and if so, will she recover?
