Cats And Kittens

Adjusting to Your New Cat or Kitten

Introducing a new cat or kitten can be very stressful for both you and your new pet. To reduce the tension, make sure to have your home prepared for the new addition to your family. A litter box and food/water dish should be available as soon as your new kitten or cat arrives. And the first thing you should do is show your new pet where they are located. Also you will want to close all doors and windows throughout your home. This will allow your new kitty to gradually learn one room at a time. Allowing your new cat to slowly adapt to their new environment will keep the feline from becoming overwhelmed. It will also help make the transition less stressful.

If you have other animals in your home you need to have the vet check the new cat out before it is allowed into your home. This will let you know your new pet is healthy. It will also give you peace of mind to know the healthy pets you already own won't be at risk for infection, disease or parasite infestation.

Multiple pet households must take time to introduce a new kitten to other animals very gradually. Whether you already own a cat or a dog you can start off this process simply by giving each animal an item that contains the new cat's scent. Then do the same thing for your new pet. Watch how each animal reacts to the scent. Does it seem aggressive or frightened? Watching these reactions will give you an idea of what you might expect when the animals first meet.

After the scent exchange has been completed the second step should be a short introduction. It is important to note that the first several introductions should allow the animals to spend only supervised time with each other. If one of the animals seems particularly aggressive or fearful you may want to put one of them in a carrier to start off. As the animals get more familiar with each other you can gradually diminish its use.

At first there may be some level of aggression, such as growling and hissing, but with time this will diminish. Just remember the animals should only be left unsupervised when you are finally comfortable with the way the animals interact. Leaving the animals unsupervised before they are ready can result in severe injuries and unnecessary vet bills.

During this transition period it is important to spend equal amounts of time playing with each animal. Lavishing to much attention on the new cat or kitten can leave your other animals feeling neglected. This in turn can result in outbursts of jealous rage against your new pet. If you have a multiple cat household you might also consider having two litter boxes to start with. This will help avoid any confusion and often eliminates litter box problems before they even have a chance to start.

Both Cats And Kittens need time to adjust to a new environment. Having your home prepared to receive a new kitty will go a long way to ensure the animal grows accustomed quickly to its new surroundings. Remember to slowly introduce the cat to one room at a time and that getting your current pets to like the new cat may take some time. Some cats and most kittens are oblivious at first to other animals and tend to think everyone and everything just wants to play. But your 15-year-old dog may look at this a bit differently. If given time the animals will establish their own hierarchy. In most instances every animal, given time, will adjust. Even if your pets don't exactly live in harmony, they will at least be able to live in the same house.

What to do about a stray mother cat and kittens?
Hello! My name is Christina, I am currently in college and living with my parents. We've had 2 stray cats when we moved in here 2 years ago, a boy and a girl. The girl had kittens probably about 2 weeks ago, considering the kittens eyes are still closed but they are a little wobbly and move around just a little. She had 4 kittens and I don't really want 8 cats on our property (she had 2 kittens before but we didn't know until we saw them jumping around our yard.) I've done my best to take care of these kittens, I gave the mother food and water, cleaned up the shed where the mother is with her kittens, and made sure that they were fine ever since I found them. Should I ask my parents if we could go to an animal shelter to drop them off so they are taken care of and can find good homes? Please help! Thank you!

Should I change from kitten food to adult food for my 11-month-old cat?
I've been feeding her Evo cat and kitten formula wet food for 2 months now. She liked it a lot. But recently she doesn't seem like eating her food unless I sprinkle with some Halo Salmon treat on it. Then she would eat 1oz or 2oz max a meal and 3-4oz a day. Most of the time she would sniff her food and turn her nose up that I can tell from her face that she hates the smell of her food. Since the food is high in protein and fat, I'm not sure if it's too heavy for her. Should I change her food to adult food now?

My cat and kitten won't get along?
I have a female cat who is nearly 8. Ever since we got her as a kitten, she'd lived with another cat, (older male). He died about 2 years ago of old age, but this means apart from the last two years, she has always lived with another cat, and she got on with him very well. A month ago, we got a male kitten, who is 15 weeks old now. He looks like a little version of our other cat that died.. Anyways, a month on and my female cat, still HATES the kitten. The kitten seems to be curious, and quite often goes up to her, trying to play. She can't even tolerate the kitten. Hisses and growls if he's even in the same room as her! I feed them both at the same time, but she point blank will not eat if he's there eating too. She literally avoids him at all costs, and hides herself in the bedroom. I really don't want this to continue, as I'd love it for them to just get on... :( Any tips?? When we first got the kitten, we kept him in the cat box, and let the female into the lounge. They sniffed each other for a bit, then the female hissed and ran away

Pros and cons of spaying/ neutering your cats and kittens? ?
Okay I want to start off saying I would appreiate no lectures on the fact that I didn't get my mother cat spayed before she had kittens. I know and I've heard it. Anyways, she had 7 kittens. I am all for getting them fixed as well as all their shots etc before rehoming. On the other hand my boyfriend doesn't want this. He doesn't believe in getting the spaying an neutering procedure done. He is a hard headed guy and doesn't believe when I tell him what I've been told about the benefits of this. I don't know how to persuade him. I'm worried I'll have to sneak and get them fixed without him knowing. Also I was told about a local shelter that will take the kittens when theyre old enough. They will fix and then rehome. As well as chip them so if they ever find their way back to the pound this place will get them out and rehome again. He still doesn't like this idea because he says they are making money of rehoming them and calling themselves a non profit. He is really getting under my skin but I'm not going to budge. These kittens will be fixed and given to good homes. Was wondering if someone could give me facts in the pros and cons to help explain to him. Also what you thought about this shelter. Thanks!
