Kidney Disease Cats
Four Causes of Feline Kidney Disease
Feline kidney disease is a common problem for older cats. However, it can affect cats of any age. There are many different reasons why your cat could develop this disease. Let's take a look at some of the most common causes.
Toxins
Toxins are one of the leading causes of feline kidney disease. Cats will readily lick antifreeze if they come across it on the ground. It will quickly destroy your cat's kidneys if treatment isn't sought immediately.
Other toxins that can cause this disease include solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals. Also, medications that your cat may be taking can cause problems with the kidneys. Medications for humans such as aspirin and antibiotics are also common culprits.
Cancer
One of the next causes of feline kidney disease is cancer. Cancer rarely originates in your cat's kidneys. In most cases, the disease has spread from another organ. Older cats are most often affected by cancer of the kidneys. However, cats of any age can develop it.
Blood Flow
Another cause of feline kidney disease is inadequate blood flow. If blood doesn't flow properly through the kidneys, they won't be able to remove wastes effectively. This will allow toxins to accumulate in the bloodstream. Inadequate blood flow through the kidneys can be caused by drugs, dehydration, or heart disease.
Cysts
Cysts are one of the final common causes of feline kidney disease. These cysts can occur in both kidneys and will enlarge over time. As they grow, they will begin to put pressure on kidney tissue. This will reduce the kidney's ability to filter waste products.

What are some treats I could give my cat who cannot have protein?
My cat who is 3 had her kidneys fail, so she is on a very low protein diet. The vet has been no help in recommending food other than the special diet kidney disease cat food. What are some things that a cat would like to eat that contain no protein?

Why does my cat have hair falling out ?
One of my five cats is about 6 to 7 years old now. She used to have a shiny grey coat and had very fat glands under her belly area. My others cats were healthy too. Apart from a bout of cat flu from which they all recovered thankfully.
Now though, all the cats are healthy still, apart from the grey cat. Her coat is no longer shiny, its dull. Her hair is corse and no longer smooth, she has lost all that fat and appears to be getting thinnner and she appears to be loosing hair towards the back of her body..in clumps.
She is eating and drinking. Pooping normally and does not seem in distress.
I thought maybe it was the result of flea problems which they were all treated for a while back. But none of the others have this problem.
If she gets any worse I will take her to the vet but does anyone know what this could be? Age? Fleas? Liver/Kidney disease? Cat flu even maybe...??

What alternative low protein diet is there to prescription foods for Kidney Disease cats?
Hi, I was advised yesterday by my Vet that my 17 year old cat has kidney disease. I have been told that she will need monthly anabolic steroid injection, along with prescribed daily tablets and I have to put her on a low protein diet such as Hills k/d or Royal Canin Renal Food. I have been horrified at the cost of these two prescribed diets and wonder if there is a cheaper alternative. Thanking you.
The vet has said my cat has to have an anabolic steroid injection monthly to help maintain her weight.

Sudden (within 12hrs) onset of pain in my kidney diseased cat after receiving subcutaneous injection at Vet?
My cat is a kidney diseased cat, 16yrs old, very thin. I took her to get a subQ injection with Vitamin B12. The fluid worked its way down to her left leg last night, and now she wont put any weight on that leg. I felt her leg and it only hurts her from her elbow joint to her wrist. I searched for common side-effects being pain in the leg the fluid settles in with no luck.

I'm in a panic here and hope i didn't hurt my cat.?
I have 6 cats..1 of which is a kidney disease cat,,he has no vaccines because of this.
A stray cat showed up outside my house last week and i started to feed him hoping to get him in a carrier and take him to a shelter or vet. He has a terrible upper respiratory infection. He's very scared and i couldn't get him in a cat carrier. I scrub my hands after i touch him or anything he came in contact with.
My own cat now has started to sneeze here and there..he's acting fine,,eating and drinking but he has been sneezing.
I have no open windows that my cat has been near nor has he had ANY contact with the cat outside...I'm scared i gave my cat something by taking care of this stray!
IF YOU WOULD HAVE READ WHAT I WROTE,,,MY CAT IS INDOORS! THE STRAY OUTSIDE IS NOT MINE,..I'M TRYING TO HELP IT.
